Caveat emptor

For the uninitiated this means “buyer beware!

The buzz of the summer is Microsoft’s brand new operating system Vista. I couldn’t think of a more appropriate statement concerning it than caveat emptor.

If you are the IT guru at a institution of higher learning run as far away from Vista as you can. And fast! New versions of Microsoft’s Windows operating system are like the sexy new cars our fathers warned us about. They were full of promises and looked great but they were all full of problems. Dad always said “wait a couple of years until they shake all the bugs out!” And he was right!

There have been lots of stories about all of the devices that stop working when you install Vista. They may be true. I don’t know. I do know that you want your students and faculty to come to a fully functioning campus. So, sit this one out for awhile and watch the agony of others.

If you really have to make a change junk out all of your PCs and replace them with Macs. Trust me on this. You won’t regret it.

  1. Oh dear! Posts like this frankly make me laugh as they perpetuate the same Vista saber rattling that all the so called IT ‘in crowd’ do. The funny thing is, whenever I talk to someone who is anti-Vista and dig a little deeper into why they are of that opininon, the vast majority had neither the technical knowledge nor the experience to back up their claims.

Do yourself a favour, do some reading (start here – http://whyamistilltyping.wordpress.com/2008/04/05/vista-bashing-cheap-traffic/) and try Vista for yourself, the only downside is you may like it (shocked in-take of breath.) Otherwise you will continue these ignorant posts and someone somewhere might have the misfortune of listening to you.

  2. Whyamistilltyping,

Thank you for your comment. However I managed software engineering at Gateway 2000 and Zenith Data Systems for many years. As such I collaborated with Microsoft on testing the readiness of their new operating systems. So you see I have both the experience and technical knowledge to form a personal opinion on the subject. However, I recognize we are all entitled to an opinion.

Good luck with Vista. I’m sticking with Mac OS/X.

  3. And good luck with MacOS/X – I didn’t mean for my post to sound so harsh, I am just tired of hearing the same worn and tired comments made by people who typically are just regurgitating what they see others write. Welcome to wordpress by the way ;)

  4. No problem. This is all about discourse. Where would we be if we couldn’t express ourselves? Besides, I appreciate passion. It shows you give a darn.

Thanks for the welcome. I’m sure we’ll have much to discuss.
